Size Sizes CHURCH churches THOUGHTS

QUERY:
Are Megachurches unscriptural?

It would seem to me that these mega churches, with their multi-million dollar campus-like grounds and all the enormous expenses that go along with the operation of these facilities, are diametrically opposed to how the early church used to meet in small groups in the homes of believers.

Jesus was a simple carpenter and I believe He would be appalled at all of these lavish sanctuaries with all their unscriptural ministries like praise and worship rock bands, etc ....

ANSWERS
It's not the size,
it's what you do with it.

ANSWERS
But for real though, it's not that it is a MEGA Church, it's what often characterizes these Megachurches.
The Hagia Sophia was a Mega-Church. The existential ground-covering of Pentecost was a Mega-Church.

ANSWERS
There is no instruction in scripture concerning the size of a church, but I would definitely be skeptical that the members of a church that size could fulfill all the commands given for how members of a church should interact.

MORE THOUGHTS
BORROWED

In Acts 2:46, Jerusalem’s Jesus movement, by this point numbering in the thousands (2:41), met together.

Here the apostles could pass on their teaching to large numbers of people at once (2:42).

This arrangement was not possible for churches in other Mediterranean cities in which churches were later planted.

Temple grounds were public spaces that could accommodate crowds listening to sages, but the other temple grounds in the Roman empire were for pagan deities. Only Jerusalem’s temple was a suitable mass-meeting place for Christians.

The next largest locations would often be villas, but these were often quite a long walk from where many other Christians lived.

Megachurch, however, is not the normal state of the church through history. One might compare dog breeding. Breeding has produced many kinds of dogs. If those dogs were on their own in the wild, however, their cross-breeding could eventually produce more generic dogs, much like their pre-bred forebears (albeit perhaps with some improvements from the stronger and more survivable varieties). When persecution comes, homes (or even caves or forests) become more natural and often safer meeting places. When transportation becomes difficult (as in the case of fuel shortages), neighborhood churches become much more serviceable.

That we see something of both models in Acts suggests that what matters is not a prefabricated format but what works for the kingdom. Still, Acts itself shows us that even in Jerusalem, where the church could meet in the public temple, the church also met in homes (Acts 2:46). They broke bread together (2:42), something more suitable in a household setting; probably the twelve apostles also made rounds in many of these homes.

That all the churches in the New Testament ultimately met in homes, wherever else they may have gathered when that was also possible, is important because it reminds us about the church’s DNA.

We are family, and therefore a family setting is helpful. Still more important, we are one body with interdependent gifts (Rom 12:4-8; 1 Cor 12:4-26), and we need a setting sufficiently intimate for us to contribute our gifts to one another. By itself, watching a sermon or even a worship team is not church (even though we do need people to preach and lead worship). We function as church when we are in relationship with one another. If we designed our architecture to that end, we would be facing one another rather than facing a stage.

Greek text speaks of tens of thousands). But God knew the future. Jerusalem would soon lay in shambles, and the future lay more with the dispersed churches positioned to reach their localities around the empire.

If many have the current blessing of large churches today, we need to think wisely in terms of the long-range future. What matters most in the long run is not the number of people who attend, but how many people we genuinely reach for Christ, and how deeply we present them mature in Christ (Col 1:28). What matters is not how much seed is sown, but where that seed will flourish and in turn produce more seed (Mark 4:15-20). It is not even how many people pray an initial prayer acknowledging Christ; only those who persevere will be the laborers’ reward (cf. 1 Cor 3:14-15; 2 John 8).

Whatever the ministries God has assigned us, let us responsibly care for the sheep, and equip God’s people to minister to one another (Eph 4:11-13).

2024 Christmas Series

HEAVEN
TOUCHES
EARTH

His Life Ministries
December 2024 Series

Main Text:
John 1:14 NLT
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Sermon Overview:
It is Christmas time again!
It is a time of the year when people cannot help but be happy and enthusiastic.
A huge smile is displayed on someone’s face when thinking about the possibility of receiving a gift or seeing an old face one has not seen for a couple of years. Indeed, it cannot be denied that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.
However, while most people are looking forward and thinking about how to celebrate this joyous season, we should never fail to assess to avoid swaying by the world’s traditions and customs when the Christmas season comes. And while the Bible does not teach explicitly the exact date of the Savior’s birth, we observe this season in the premise of Christian faith - the fulfillment of the Promise, the coming of the Messiah, the birth of the Savior. But then, one question must be answered correctly: HAVE we lost the essence of this joyous season?
So, this year’s Christmas series, HEAVEN TOUCHES EARTH, aims to rediscover the essence of Christmas. Through this sermon series, we will dig deep to appreciate John's words in his epistles: AND THE WORD BECAME HUMAN AND MADE HIS HOME AMONG US.

DECEMBER 08, 2024
Kick Off
Birthday Sunday
HEAVEN TOUCHES EARTH: Rediscovering the Essence of Christmas
Verse:
John 1:14a
So the Word became human

The apostle John described the stepping out, "So the Word became human and made his home among us.
He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son." (John 1:14 NLT). This verse is the climax of John's prologue as John completes his introduction of Jesus by proclaiming His humanity amid His divinity. This verse contains the truth behind the story of the angels, shepherds, the Wise Men, and the journey to Bethlehem that first Christmas morning.
Without this verse, the rest of the story has no meaning.
John 1:14 tells us what happened 2000 years ago and what it means today.
The keywords are grace and truth.
We often say that Jesus is God.
That is true. But here's an incredible statement: God became Jesus of Nazareth! When he stepped out, Jesus Christ became the visible expression of the invisible God. He became a visual aid, as it were, to reveal the nature of the Father. He was God in a suit of flesh.
He was God expressing himself in a language that we could understand.
He was God announcing to the world:
"I have come!  "When Jesus stepped out, the infinite God took on the form of a tiny unborn baby boy. The Son did not cease to be God when he became a man. He added humanity, but he did not subtract deity. He was God and fully the God-man.
The Almightyness of God moved in a human arm. The love of God now beats in a human heart. The wisdom of God now spoke from human lips. The mercy of God reached forth from human hands. Jesus was God wrapped in human flesh.

What does all of this mean for us?
The fact that Jesus came, stepped out, and was God in human flesh has several implications. Jesus is here; Jesus wants to be involved; Jesus identifies with our pain; Jesus offers GRACE.

COMMUNION SUNDAY
HEAVEN TOUCHES EARTH:
Inviting Us into His Home
Verse:
John 1:14b
and made his home among us.

The word dwelt means "to pitch a tent," or as military folks call it, "to bivouac," or as theologians define it, "to tabernacle." The Tabernacle was sometimes called the Tent of Meeting because it was the divinely appointed meeting place between God and man. In the same way, but in a much deeper sense, Jesus is where we meet God today.
"Pitching a tent among us" implies that God wants to be on familiar terms with us, close to us, and interact with us a lot. So, Jesus became the Tabernacle, Mediating God's presence to other human beings. Since now Jesus is not only God but God and man, he has a commonality to mediate between the two.

DECEMBER 22, 2024
LIFEGROUP SUNDAY & CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
HEAVEN TOUCHES EARTH: Showing us His Unfailing Love and Faithfulness
Verse: John 1:14c He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness.

Jesus came grace upon grace. Grace and truth are seen in Christ, meaning we not only have the truth about God seen in Jesus, but it is also done in an undeservedly kind way. Jesus' ministry was marked by those two aspects: the truth about God and how to live faithfully to God, and grace showed in God’s compassion and love towards broken and sinful people who struggled to walk in holiness and needed forgiveness and love shown in Christ.
God, in his kindness, took on flesh to dwell with his people so they could experience his presence and find forgiveness since he could fully experience humanity in a way that satisfied the demands of the Law and revealed grace and truth to us.

MISSION SUNDAY
YEAR-END SPECIAL

HEAVEN TOUCHES EARTH:
LIVING FOR HIS GLORY

Verse:
John 1:14d
And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Glory refers to the visible manifestation of God's presence and power.
It carries with it the idea of weight and importance.

When Jesus stepped out and walked on the earth, people could see and gaze upon God's presence shining through Him. They saw the importance of God in their lives. And, just so there was no mistake.

GOD is a MISSIONARY GOD.
HE IS ON A MISSION.

When you look at Jesus, you see God's face. God wants to be seen and known in His Son. When you hear Jesus teach, you hear God teach. When you come to experience Jesus, you experience God.
In Jesus, we see God.
And may this be our GOAL as we move forward to the following year.
We may cultivate a heart to know Jesus more because to know Him more is to understand our Father God in heaven better.
And we may decide to live for
His glory!

For you, who is your Greatest High Priest in the Order of Melquisedec?

Are you of Adam or Christ, the Second or the last Adam?

For you, who is your Sovereign King and Lord?

Personal Appeals / Challenges:

Let’s acknowledge Christ the Greatest Prophet of all, even far greater than Moses!

Let’s acknowledge Christ, our High Priest after the Order of Melchisedec!

Let’s be in Christ, the Second Last Adam, not the First Adam!

Let’s have Christ, our Sovereign King and Lord!

TIME MANAGEMENT for TURN AROUND LEADERS

Time Management
ARTICLE

Psalm 90:12
"So teach us to number our days..."

Luke 19:11-27
The parable of the "Pounds." The master left some commodity with each of the servants.
They each had the same amount. Each was called to account for what they achieved with their pounds upon His return.

It is helpful to think of our activities as falling into TWO Categories:

a.  Non-discretionary:
All we can do is manage these matters in such a way as to have more time for discretionary involvement.

b.  Discretionary:
The things we choose to do based upon visions, values and purposes.

Our goal is NOT to become busier - but rather to become more effective in managing our lives so as to allow more time for:

a. relaxation
b. family time
c. being with friends
d. recreation
e. tackling new challenges and dreams

Time cannot be stopped, saved, traded, or slowed.
Our choice is whether we waste it, spend it, or invest it.
The real issue in the tips we share under the heading of "Time Management" is technically
"Self-Management" or "Self-Discipline."

The following list of "Self-Discipline" tips is not intended to be a "Life-Style,"
but rather a GAME PLAN for those segments of life when one feels overwhelmed with too much to do and not sufficient time to accomplish all the demands.

The LIST is not arranged in any particular order.
Find the handful of suggestions which fit your situation and use them.
The time you find available should not be used for more work, but rather be considered a REWARD for your self-discipline.

50 Self-Discipline Tips

1. Just say NO.

2. Use a stand-up desk. This is especially helpful when sorting mail, reading memos, articles, and studying.

3. Hold stand-up meetings. People will stick with the focus of the meeting if not allowed to sit.

4. If your office has an open door, remove all chairs from around your desk.
When people come in the clear message is that this is not the place to loiter.

5. Stay out of sight.
Use the back door when possible.
This prevents you from appearing rude.

6. Use to-do lists religiously.
QUOTE:  A commitment unwritten is nothing more than a nice intention.

7. Use a time analysis sheet for a week.
Compare (in fifteen-minute blocks) what you planned to do versus what you actually did.
Are there patterns?

8. Work off a desk calendar.
a. This helps you avoid the pressure of having people looking over your shoulder while you are checking your calendar.
b. This helps you avoid making priority decisions on the spot.
c. You keep all the details of your schedule in one place.

9. Establish and review your life-priorities.
QUOTE:  If I don't know my priorities, everybody I meet will set them for me.

10. Have several different day-planning sheets. Familiarity breeds contempt.

11. When you suddenly remember something you've forgotten at night, get up and write it down.
Do the same during the waking hours while at home. Have a designated spot for notes you make to yourself.

12. Habitually carry a stash of 3 x 5 cards or post-its.

13. Close your door. The single most effective time saver.

14. Do tasks which require creativity in your peak times. "Know Thyself"

15. Do mundane but necessary tasks in your down time.

16. Exercise regularly.
QUOTE: When I'm really busy I just cannot afford to neglect prayer, exercise, and Bible reading.

17. Handle (most) paper only once!
a. We usually don't do this because we are afraid to make decisions.
QUOTE: Most of the great challenges of our lives are simply decisions we really don't want to make.
b. This is the fundamental principle which leads to a clear desk.

18. Develop a habit of punctuality.
QUOTE: If you're on time... you're late.

19. Do Two things at once. Example:
-- Drive and listen to tapes.
-- Carry cards for memory work while waiting.
-- Always carry reading material to read while waiting.
-- Exercise while waiting.
-- Work while on "hold" by using speaker phone.

20. Sleep well!
QUOTE: Weariness makes cowards out of all of us... and cowards seldom make bold decisions.

21. Think of your week in twenty-one blocks of time. After you have nailed your priorities, block them off first! Push yourself to complete all work by self-imposed deadlines.
QUOTE: Work will always expand to fill the time allotted for it.

22. Avoid events and invitations which only boost your ego.

23. When possible double your work results. Use what you do is multiple ways.

24. Become a filer, not a piler.

25. Leave your work space clean each night. The only piece of paper which should be visible when you arrive is your daily to-do list and emergency post-its.

26. Take once-a-day vitamins. Sickness lessens productivity and usually indicates I am not handling stress well.

27. Be prepared for personal appointments and phone appointments.

28. When the purpose of a visit is accomplished, end it.
Remember the 80/20 rule: 20% of the time is used dealing with the business at hand.
80% of the time is spent to "be liked."

29. Do what you dislike doing first, when possible. Schedule a reward at the end.

30. The most difficult part of most tasks is beginning.

31. The goal of a TO-DO LIST is not to have a long list, but to cross thing off in proper order.

32. Don't read the whole book-find the meat, and put the book away for another time.
Remember the 80% rule applies to books too. 20% of the book has 80% of the content.

33. When you're very busy, avoid new things. Stick with routines. This requires less emotional energy.

34. Do first things first and second things not at all.

35. Avoid pleasure reading (newspapers, magazines).

36. Keep business breakfasts and lunches to a minimum.
Most of them are simply to "be liked."

37. Communicate by FAX and e-mail. Excellent medium for relaying facts, but not for building relationships.

38. Return phone calls in one segment. Remember, this is for their convenience, not yours.
Leave messages which answer their questions on the recorder.

39. When on the phone, deal with the business and hang up.

40. If possible, do correspondence with dictation.

41. Meet in their office. This means you can leave when the meeting has been fulfilled.

42. Ask them to drive to meet you.

43. Schedule back-to-back appointments. This forces closure.
"I really hate to be rude to George who is waiting to see me. I'm sure you understand."

44. Keep a time log for one week.
Compare what you planned to do with what actually took place. Are there patterns?

45. Scrutinize on-going commitments harder than one-time commitments.

46. Screen all calls (secretary, family, answering machine).

47. Do annual planning.

48. Do your most bothersome tasks first. Get rid of the distraction.

49. Delegate:
a. low priority items which won't have much impact.
b. to someone who can do it 80% as well as you. Those people are easier to find and you won't be threatened.

50. Avoid television like the plague!
