Life in Christ: Key to Happiness
His Life Ministries July-August Series
Main Verse:
Matthew 5:1-9
Series Overview:
While we recognize perfection is difficult in this fallen and broken world, there is still a deep desire to experience a profound sense of happiness. A state of well-being where you are happy with what you have, happy where you are, and still happy no matter how your situation looks. We look for ways to be genuinely happy. But when life happens, this quest becomes more difficult. Therefore, our July and August Sunday Series is Life in Christ: Key to Happiness. In this two month series, we will learn how to live a life of happiness in Christ using "The Beatitudes". The Beatitudes are blessings declared by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew. Eight blessings are found in the Gospel of Matthew, while four blessings and woes are found in the Gospel of Luke. In the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus delivered a series of teachings known as the Beatitudes, which continue to resonate today. Beattitudes are like a road map to living a blessed life, showing us how to be better people and make a world a better place.
Beatitude Meaning:
The word beatitude comes from the Latin beatitudo, meaning "blessedness".
The phrase "Blessed are in each beatitude implies a current state of happiness or well-being.
This expression held a powerful meaning of "divine joy and perfect happiness" to the people of Christ's day. In other words, Jesus conveyed that "divinely happy and fortunate are those who possess these inward qualities."
The Beatitudes are often seen as a key component of Christian teachings and offer guidance on living a blessed life in Christ.

Life in Christ: Key to Happiness
Verse:
Matthew 5:1-3 NLT
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said: "God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
The phrase "poor in spirit" refers to a spiritual condition of poverty.
It describes a person who recognizes their need for God.
"The kingdom of heaven' refers to people who acknowledge God as King.
One poor in spirit knows they are spiritually bankrupt apart from Jesus Christ.
Jesus is saying that those who will go to Heaven are those who recognize they can do nothing to earn it. This mindset sets the stage for the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.
As we study the following guidelines, we must never forget that only those who recognize they cannot earn God's favor will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
Key Points:
1
Becoming poor in spirit starts with understanding our place before God.
2
We have nothing to offer before God, and we can only be blessed by what Jesus Christ alone has done on our behalf.
3
Apart from Christ, we will never experience everlasting happiness.

Healing to the Broken Hearted
Verse:
Matthew 5:4 NLT
God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are those who mourn," which refers to mourning over sin and one's sinful nature, leading to repentance, brings healing and a closer relationship with God. This involves mourning over one's sins and unworthiness, a deep sorrow and contrition for wrongdoing, often linked to repentance and a turning back to God.
Just like being poor in spirit doesn't stop when you depend upon God for salvation, mourning over sin does not stop when you find forgiveness. Mourning over your sins is something that God will continue to use in your life to mold you into the image of Christ.
Key points:
1
Allow God to heal your broken heart.
2
Repentance is turning away from sin and turning towards God.
3
God is close to the brokenhearted, and His heart is always to heal and deliver them.

Living a Humble Life
Verse:
Matthew 5:5 NLT
God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
The word "meek in the original Greek, praus, can be translated as "gentle, mild, or "submissive. Humility is not a weakness but a strength, leading to God's favor and blessing.
It is associated with inner peace, comfort, and a deep satisfaction that comes from living in alignment with God's will. 'Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth is a call to cultivate humility and gentleness, pleasing to God and leading to a deeper and more fulfilling life.

Topic:
A Satisfied Life
Verse:
Matthew 5:6 NLT
God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
"You are what you eat."
Nutritionists tell us that our appetites determine our diet, our diet determines our intake, and our intake determines our health. It also applies in the spiritual realm. Jesus challenges us to look at our spiritual appetite with the penetrating words of the Fourth Beatitude: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled."
In this simple sentence, Jesus tells us that our hunger determines our spiritual health.
Key points:
Don’t run after earthly things because they cannot bring satisfaction.
Christ is more than enough for us.
Learn to live a contented life.

Week Four and Communion Sunday
Topic:
You Receive What You Give
Verse:
Matthew 5:7 NLT God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
We reap what we sow.
Those who show mercy will receive mercy. Likewise, those who have received great mercy will show great mercy. Jesus illustrated this principle with the parable of the unmerciful servant who was forgiven a great debt but refused to forgive a small debt from someone else. (Matthew 18:21-35)
A lack of mercy shown to others shows you have not received mercy yourself.
Key points:
1
Show mercy to others through forgiveness, kindness, and compassion.
2
Pray and bless those who persecute you.

Change From the Inside Out
Verse:
Matthew 5:8 NLT God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
The "pure in heart" are those cleansed from within. Being "pure in heart" is not exhibiting an outward righteousness that men can see, but inward holiness that only God sees. True blessedness comes not just from outward actions but from a transformed heart.
God is concerned with the heart, not just outward behavior. It's not enough to appear righteous; a true disciple of Christ strives for inner purity.
Key points:
1
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
2
God is calling us to live a consecrated life.

Week Six
Topic:
Be A Peace-maker
Verse:
Matthew 5:9 NLT God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
Jesus laid down His life to make peace between God and sinners; when we can carry that message of peace to others, we are peacemakers. Only those who experience the peace of God can bring the peace of knowing God to others. A person must have a real relationship with God before they can help someone else know God.
Those who bring the wonderful message of God’s peace to the world are "peacemakers," and Jesus calls them the "children of God."
Key points:
1
We are ambassadors of Christ.
2
We must live a peaceful life. (Romans 12:18)
3
God entrusts us with this same message of reconciliation to take it to others. 2 Corinthians 5:19-20

Representing Jesus to the World
Verse:
Matthew 13-15 NLT “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, giving everyone in the house light.
Matthew 5:13-16 uses the metaphors of salt and light to describe the impact Christians are meant to have on the world. As followers of Jesus, we are called the "salt of the earth," influencing and preserving the world with our good works.
We are also to be the "light of the world," illuminating the truth of the Gospel through our words and actions, so that others may see our good deeds and glorify God.
Key points:
1
Jesus is counting on us all to be the salt of the earth and the world's light.
2
Let your light shine wherever you are.
